As a public purpose institution, the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) is committed to creating a healthy, sustainable, and socially just society. The UTS Shopfront Program, delivered by the Centre for Social Justice and Inclusion (CSJI), brings this commitment to life. For nearly 3 decades, Shopfront has connected students with under-resourced community organisations, enabling them to collaborate on real world projects that deliver tangible social impact.

Shopfront supports community-engaged learning by embedding students in projects that respond to community priorities. These experiences help students apply their disciplinary skills in practice, build professional capabilities, and develop a deeper understanding of social justice issues. In turn, community organisations benefit from access to university knowledge and resources that would otherwise be out of reach.

This 2024 evaluation is the first formal assessment of the program’s implementation and impact. Using

a mixed-methods approach, the evaluation captures the perspectives of students, academic staff, and community partners to assess the effectiveness, relevance, and value of the program.
