Material recycling is one of the strategies that will help to achieve emission reduction targets including net zero by 2050. Recycling reduces greenhouse gas emissions by diverting materials from landfill and by reducing the need to manufacture new raw materials. This metric links progress towards material circularity with carbon reduction goals in the NSW Government’s Net Zero Plan, which includes a target of net zero emissions from organic waste to landfill by 2030. Diversion of organics to recycling avoids methane emissions from landfill.
